Charleston Community Gardeners

Charleston Community Gardeners

2020-09-30  •  admin  •  Dundee

The main aim of the project is to bring people together in the community of Charleston through a shared interest in different types of gardening. Whether it’s growing flowers for pleasure or vegetables to eat or simply getting a hand to maintain your own home garden, Charleston Community Gardeners can provide experienced and enthusiastic volunteers and equipment to get the job done.

CCG already has a core group of three volunteers who are keen to increase their numbers from the local community who would have their base at the Church to meet and plan community activities.

Hot Chocolate work with 300-400 young people each year from across Dundee. Life is difficult for most of them, and we’re privileged that they share their stories with us. We try to make Hot Chocolate feel like 'the opposite of trauma'; for them: that we're safe, trustworthy, empowering, collaborative, consistent, supportive. And, crucially, that we see them asthey are: full of energy, skill and brilliance. Lockdown made their life tougher (79% said their mental health deteriorated, 50% were worse off financially) and its impacts are hitting young people disproportionately (numbers not in education/employment doubled since March).

Hot Chocolate stayed alongside (online, by phone, taking walks) and are re-building youth work opportunities and support they can rely on. Your support would help our outdoor drop-in (3 nights a week) and street work in the city centre: youth workers creating a homely, safe place where young people can find company and support, and reaching out to connect with those struggling to connect.

Creative online and indoor work will continue alongside but the commitment to be with young people where they are and to be consistent through the uncertainties of Covid restrictions makes our outdoor work essential even into the Dundee winter.

Family Art Club Dundee

Family Art Club Dundee

2020-09-30  •  admin  •  Dundee

Family Art Club is a partnership between local people, the Steeple Church and the city’s creative community. The project aims to encourage new friendships by bringing together people who may not otherwise meet in a safe environment at this challenging time. People who may not regularly get involved in this kind of activity will have an equal opportunity to participate. Families with children of all ages will be able to attend arts based sessions within various local, easily accessible green spaces. Six creative sessions will be delivered at locations across the city including parks, grass areas and community garden spaces. With the help of professional artists each family will create their own designs inspired by nature and using natural materials such as leaves or twigs.

Children will also learn important skills in conservation through planting in pots or raised beds and litter picking. Images of the artworks will be displayed online: http://www.instagram.com/familyartclubdundee , enabling many more people to share in the positivity and contribute with pictures of their own creative endeavours! Families, friends and the wider community will be invited to an exhibition of the work at the Steeple Church next June.
